Photo Documentary : Bournemouth In Bloom 2002

While moonlighting across Bournemouth and Dorset delivering rental cars for Hertz I began shooting images of the town, I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn't know how to do it. These images have nothing in common at all with Martin Parr's 'The Last Resort' but that was my ultimate motivation. I wanted to capture the crappy English seaside, just as he had in 1983, but how do you do it? How do you photograph people unknowingly and get it so right, I was trapped trying to record grit with geometric lines art school lines and this is what I had managed to come up with.. I'm sure they could have hung in the Bournemouth Art College end of year exhibition quite happily as some slightly cynical art not art piece, but I knew without people, or narrative or some type of visual dialogue I would be a last resort myself. After shooting this I was at a loss, I was tired of seeing the world the same way and frustrated by my inability to photograph what I knew I wanted capture. I had no idea of how I would get out of this one dimensional rut but I did realise one thing, that I had to become uncomfortable with what i was doing and how I was doing it, that would mean I was heading for unfamiliar territory.
