About The Architecture

Built using the original structure and added to over a 15 year period which spanned two different owners this luxury New York getaway in Salisbury Connecticut has all the makings of a family New England home in the country. Completed and designed by Amber Construction it is pleasantly understated while checking all the boxes for a traditional second home, with a stunning swimming pool, a pool house finished in pungent Spanish Cedar, a tree house, a tennis court overlooking the rolling hills of Litchfield County and of course all the creature comforts a home needs inside during the harsh New England winter months.

About This Shoot

This home was photographed for Amber Construction on three separate occasions and once for the interior designers. Since it was complete many years ago with several additions over a 15 year period the layout posed many challenges. Some interiors we just never intended to be photographed and this was one such candidate. That is not to take away from the craftsmanship itself, it's simply a case of a traditional home with many uneasy connections between rooms which were added over time and low ceilings coupled with high end finishes.

The home itself is beautiful, photographing it is another story. I used a variety of hot lights and strobes through out different areas of the house, working with the sun both inside and out to capture each room and exterior angle at it's best. I like to thread a narrative through my work and this was achieved here by cherry picking particular angles which enjoyed being photographed while highlighting the quality of this home and the care that went into it's finer features. Many of the outstanding features are reclaimed hardware such as antique doors, handles and windows which are carefully planned and designed into the structure.

It took an unusual amount of time to get to know this particular building, primarily because it did not like being photographed. Part of the job of an architectural photographer is to persist and wrestle any structure into a photographic story (in my case, others prefer to illustrate the building and only the building), in either case, there is always one shot to be had but finding it takes a certain level of commitment. Never concede to the concrete!
